Chubu Electric Power Miraiz, Chubu Electric Power and Mitsu…link.gif 2025年05月19日 11時00分

Chubu Electric Power Miraiz Co., Inc. (Head Office: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture; President & Director: Hironori Kamiya), Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (Head Office: Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture; President & Director: Kingo Hayashi), and Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Company, Limited (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Shinichiro Funabiki) have been studying services ("Service") to create and utilize more J Blue Credits (Note 2) derived from Blue Carbon (Note 1). Since the policy for the development of a "reliable credit evaluation method (Note 3), an important element of the Service, has been established, the three companies today signed an agreement ("Agreement") to pursue the development of the Service. (Note 1) This is carbon that is stored on the seafloor and in the deep ocean after coastal and marine ecosystems absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis.  (Note 2) Carbon-offset credits issued and sold by Japan Blue Economy Association (JBE) for projects whose purpose is to protect and foster blue carbon ecosystems.  (Note 3) In some cases, when the amount of carbon dioxide fixation in seaweed beds and seaweed farming is calculated and submitted to JBE, the amount of certified credits is underestimated due to insufficient reliability of the documentary evidence. The amount of certified credits is expected to increase by using the latest technology to evaluate the calculated amount with a high degree of accuracy. Summary of Agreement The three companies mentioned above will promote research on restoring the marine environment and fixing carbon dioxide through seaweed bed restoration and seaweed farming in the ocean. Together, they will develop technology to improve the accuracy of evaluating the amount of carbon dioxide fixed by the restoration and farming, ultimately establishing a "reliable credit evaluation method". Further consideration will also be given to developing blue carbon-derived, CO2-free menus that utilize the created credits, as well as financial services to support the scheme. The three companies will promote solutions to global environmental issues continuously, aiming to promote carbon neutrality further and provide services that meet the expectations and needs of our customers. Commencement of Abekawa Hydroelectric Power Station commerc…link.gif 2025年04月02日 14時00分

Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. (President & Director: Kingo Hayashi, "Chubu Electric Power") has completed construction of Abekawa Hydroelectric Power Station (the "Station") and started commercial operation today. The Station is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric power plant with a generating output of 7,830 kW, utilizing the flowing water of the Abe River in the Abe River System. We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of the local community and relevant parties in the construction of the Station. At the same time, Chubu Electric Power Miraiz Co., Inc. (President: Hironori Kamiya; "Miraiz") today started providing an off-site virtual PPA service (Note 1) utilizing this Station to its customers, including the following eight companies: AGC TECHNO GLASS Co.,Ltd. (President & CEO: Hiroshi Yamakawa), The Shizuoka Bank, Ltd. (President: Minoru Yagi), SOMIC ISHIKAWA INC. (President: Kaname Saito), Toyota Boshoku Corporation (President: Masayoshi Shirayanagi), Nabeya Bi-tech Kaisha (President & CEO: Yujiro Okamoto), Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (Representative Director and President, Chief Executive Officer: Tadashi Maruno), Merck Electronics Ltd. (President: Masaru Nagata), and Yamaha Corporation (President and Representative Executive Officer: Atsushi Yamaura). (Note 1) This service provides only environmental value (value that can be shown to have zero CO2 emissions) derived from renewable energy sources installed in an off-site location of the customer. Through this initiative, Miraiz procures environmental value (non-fossil certificates (Note 2)) from this Station and deliver them to customers mainly in Shizuoka Prefecture (Note 3). By having customers commit to long-term continuous procurement of environmental value, power producers can expect stable business operations, which will lead to the expansion and long-term utilization of renewable energy. The customers, including the eight companies, will be able to secure stable, long-term environmental value derived from the renewable energy sources produced by the Station for the contract period of 20 years starting today. This service is expected to reduce total annual CO2 emissions by approximately 17,000 tons. (Note 2) It is an environmental value certificate of electricity generated from non-fossil power sources that do not emit CO2, including renewable energy. (Note 3) Since customers have electricity supply and demand contracts with Miraiz, electricity procured by Miraiz mainly from fossil power sources and wholesale power exchanges will also be supplied to customers. Conventional off-site PPA service (physical PPA (Note 4)) requires the customer to simultaneously consume electricity generated by the customer's dedicated renewable energy source, so Miraiz recommends an economically optimal scale of renewable energy power sources by checking the customer's hourly power consumption. Therefore, for customers such as factories where power consumption differs significantly between operating and non-operating days of the production line, the amount of power consumption on non-operating days becomes the upper limit of the amount of installation. The problem was that it was not possible to cover all of the electricity consumption on operating days with electricity generated by the customer's dedicated renewable energy power source. (Note 4) A service that delivers electricity generated by a dedicated renewable energy power source installed off the customer's premises and environmental value to the customer as a set. The virtual PPA, on the other hand, provides an environmental value that is separate from the electricity generated by the renewable energy source, allowing the customer to install the electricity generated by the renewable energy source flexibly and practically regardless of whether the production line is in operation or not, day or night, season or other factors. The Chubu Electric Power Group has set a goal of expanding renewable energy to more than 3.2 million kW (8 billion kWh) through ownership, construction, and maintenance around 2030. We will continue to actively develop power sources and promote the development and utilization of renewable energy sources with local customers by providing services that meet their needs, thereby contributing to the realization of a decarbonized society. Agreement signed to install the largest capacity rock therm…link.gif 2025年03月12日 13時00分

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corporation ("Toshiba ESS"), Chubu Electric Power Co., Inc. ("Chubu Electric Power"), and Okazaki City in Aichi Prefecture ("Okazaki City") today signed an agreement (the "Agreement") to install Japan's largest (Note1) plant using rock thermal energy storage and energy management technology with a thermal capacity of several tens of megawatt-hours (the "Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility"). The initiatives to be implemented based on the Agreement have been adopted by the Ministry of the Environment for its FY2024 Regional Co-creation and Cross-sectoral Carbon Neutral Technology Research and Development Program. Based on the Agreement, the three parties will conduct a study and verification (the "Feasibility Study") from today until the end of FY2026, based on actual data on electricity and heat demand in Okazaki City, for the introduction of the facilities, including consideration of the optimal heat capacity and installation location of the Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility.Based on the results of the Feasibility Study, Toshiba ESS and Chubu Electric Power plan to fabricate the equipment sequentially starting in 2027. The heat capacity of the equipment is expected to be several tens of megawatt-hours, which is the expected capacity when rock thermal storage is implemented in society. Okazaki City is considering installing the Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility by FY2029 and supplying heat and electricity derived from the facility to residences, public facilities, and businesses in Okazaki City under the Ministry of the Environment's Decarbonization Leading Area Project. In addition, the city is considering coordinating the supply and demand of electricity using the Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility in cooperation with new power companies in the region to contribute to further utilization of renewable energy sources such as solar power generation ("renewable energy"). The generation and consumption of electricity occur simultaneously, so the two must always be matched, and if this balance is lost, a blackout will occur in the worst situation. In order to prevent blackouts, the output of natural variable power sources (solar and wind power) may be suppressed based on the priority dispatch rules (Note2) established by the national government and the Organization for Cross-regional Coordination of Transmission Operators, JAPAN. In recent years, the expansion of the introduction of renewable energy sources, primarily natural variable power sources, has led to a widening gap between electricity supply and demand during periods such as spring and autumn, when electricity consumption is low, and the output suppression of natural variable power sources has increased, which has become an issue. In order to solve this issue, attention has been given to a technology that achieves stable energy supply and efficient energy use by storing excess electricity as thermal energy in thermal storage materials such as rock, molten salt, and concrete, and providing heat or generating electricity as needed ("thermal energy storage technology"). In particular, the rock thermal storage technology on which this Feasibility Study will be conducted is expected to be highly superior in terms of environmental friendliness, economic efficiency, and equipment reliability. Toshiba ESS and Chubu Electric Power have focused on rock thermal storage technology, which is expected to be highly superior as a thermal energy storage technology, and have conducted joint research. In 2022, the two companies developed a test facility for a rock thermal storage system with a heat capacity of approximately 500 kilowatt-hours and conducted a full-scale technical development and demonstration test within the Yokohama Complex of Toshiba Corporation. In addition, in November 2024, a four-way agreement was signed including Shin Tokai Paper Co., Ltd. and Shimada City, Shizuoka Prefecture, to conduct a technology demonstration test in FY2026 at the Shin Tokai Paper Shimada Mill using the Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility with a thermal capacity of approximately 10MWh. Through the efforts based on the Agreement, the three parties aim to contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society through the effective use of renewable energy and heat, and will accelerate efforts toward the practical application of rock thermal storage technology. (Note1) This is the first plan in Japan to install tens of megawatt-hour-class facilities using rock thermal storage technology (as of March 2025, according to the three parties). (Note2) Rules that specify the conditions and order of output control for power sources in operation, etc., in response to fluctuations in consumption and other factors, in order to achieve a balance between power generation and consumption. Role of each party Toshiba ESS Overall coordination of the Agreement, as well as specification review and operation simulation of the entire Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility Chubu Electric Power Provision of power system data Okazaki City Cooperation in verification of simulation of CO2 reduction effect in the city, provision of data for implementation of the Feasibility Study for introduction of the Rock Thermal Storage EM Facility.
